Established in 2005, the objective of the Leather Working Group (LWG) is to develop and maintain a protocol that assesses the environmental compliance and performance capabilities of leather tanneries and promotes sustainable and appropriate environmental business practices within the leather industry.
Today, 87% of our leather is sourced from LWG tanneries that take into account leather sourcing processes, labor conditions and sustainable water usage. Many of our top styles are sourced from Gold Certified tanneries, the highest standard awarded.
Established in 2007, REPREVE® is the leading, most trusted, branded performance fiber made from recycled materials (including plastic bottles). REPREVE® offsets using new petroleum, emitting fewer greenhouse gases and conserving water and energy in the process. That makes a big difference for our future. To date, they have transformed over 16 billion recycled plastic bottles into recycled fibers.
In Spring 2020, Sakroots will be launching a recycled collection called Seascape which features REPREVE® exterior material and lining. Our goal is to have 100% of lining used by The Sak made from sustainable materials by 2023.
Many The Sak bags feature our PETA-certified heritage crochet yarn, which we have been using for 30 years.
