Who We Are
We make Consciously Crafted objects that invite touch.
Since our founding, we’ve always been about more than bags. Each style captures our love of hand-crafted, textural designs rooted in both traditional and reinvented techniques. We share the spirit of those who are curious and conscious about the world around us and welcome all to join on our journey of discovery.

In 1989 childhood friends Mark Talucci and Todd Elliott set out to travel the world, on a break from their mundane corporate careers and a mission to find something more meaningful.
Between Bali and their hometown of San Francisco, a vision was formed to bring that spirit and craftsmanship home with them by way of a simple natural rattan and leather bag fashioned out of an everyday Balinese sleeping mat. It was a uniquely casual style that broke through in an era of buttoned-up business casual. Mark and Todd saw it as an invitation to walk your own path—a more easygoing one that strayed from convention. And a new beginning for laid-back style.
Our Story
Our story starts with a spark.

Soon we grew from that single style to a brand with national reach, selling through some of the nation’s largest retailers and inspiring Mark and Todd to go a step further.
Staying true to texture, they created a singular bag from a unique Tightweave™ fabrication using hand-crocheted string—the company’s first of many vegan bags that kicked off a “crochet “craze.” Their 120 Hobo, with its ergonomic shape and roomy interior, soon became one the most iconic bags of the 90s. Soon after, they expanded into leather styles with signature handcrafted details.
We still do things a little differently, that’ll always be our style. And we’ve remained true to craftsmanship, texture and sustainability—dedication that stitches together our past and present.

Our Signature
Loop, our new design mark, is shorthand for our brand. It’s based on the Bali Knot, the original symbol that we launched our brand with 30 years ago. It’s steeped in the same meaning and representation, acting as a symbol of our craft, connectivity and three brand pillars: people, planet, product.
It features a woven pattern, connecting our products to our global artisans. Its closed, connected line stands for our re-commitment to creating a more sustainable and ethical world.

"As I look back over the last three decades and where the world was when we started versus now, I recognize the importance of reframing The Sak. We’ve always been part of the global artisan community and we’re thrilled to now communicate that along with an added pledge for environmental stewardship, authentic craftsmanship and philanthropy." – The Sak Co-Founder & CEO Mark Talucci
